Erotica a bit of history... Eros represented the God of love for the Greeks. The equivalent to the Romans was Cupid -the naked usually winged boy often holding a bow and arrow-. Eros was considered the son of Aphrodite, goddess of sexual love and beauty, by either Zeus (the king of the gods), Ares (god of war and of battle), or Hermes (divine messenger of the gods). Erotica instead, represents an artistic venue, those works that have an erotic theme; in particular books containing stories and tales of sexual love in a sensuous or voluptuous manner. The word erotica typically closely relates to sappho and to lesbianism. It is different than the word pornography which can also have literary meanings but it usually indicates lascivious desire. Among the oldest sample of erotica art are Paleolithic cave paintings and carvings dating back to 12,000 years ago. These were discovered at Creswell Crags in England. |
